The fliers were an appeal to conscience and a rallying call to the German people to defy Hitler and Nazis. Such views were treasonous, punishable by imprisonment and death. The White Rose secretly mailed the fliers to names and addresses they found in the telephone directories of other German cities. Sophie and her brother Hans Scholl were courageous activists at a time and place where very few ever dared to speak against the Fuehrer or the Nazi totalitarian terror state.
